A project by Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Marina Christodoulidou, Peter Eramian
Poster designed by Nico Stephou
THE BROKEN PITCHER launches in May 2022 in two formats, as an exhibition at Thkio Ppalies in Nicosia and a series of public film screenings across Cyprus. The project is conceived and organised by Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Marina Christodoulidou and Peter Eramian, and co-produced by Thkio Ppalies and GfZK in Leipzig. The first presentation will take place at Kaimakli Square on Thursday, 5th of May at 20:00. The exhibition opens on 6th of May at 18:30 with a live performance at 20:00 by Panagiotis Mina.
The crucial occurrence of The Broken Pitcher is a meeting at a bank in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 2019, deciding over the foreclosure of a family house. The negotiation between bank employees and the affected family is reenacted in a short video based on memory protocols of those involved. The foreclosure is one of many on the island and is a result of the agreement between Cyprus and the Troika (EC, ECB and IMF).
Inspired by Abbas Kiarostami’s film “First Case - Second Case” (1979, Iran), a proposed question intertwines the two parts of the film, opening up discursively. The momentous bank meeting is shown to people from various backgrounds who are invited to respond to the intricate question: “In your opinion, what should the bank employees do?” The filmed responses that are shown encompass perspectives of people from different interest groups in Cyprus and beyond, including housing rights activists, people who share similar fates, public figures, lawyers, economists and artists contextualising debt and tributes in relation to the micro- and macro effects of colonial history.
The exhibition displays the film set in-situ and physically consolidates personal and collective readings of the meeting space and the event itself. The set was shaped collaboratively with artists and artisans mostly based in Cyprus with artworks by each artist embedded in the space. For this collaborative artistic effort, artists exhibit works that are informed by various aspects of colonial history, ongoing austerity, and a shared interest in collaboration. Working with dead stock from failed businesses or based on historical tools of conquests, the sculptural gestures of the artists involved weave together and challenge the different settings where politics, economics and art are enacted. The artworks become witnesses, portals or allies in the events unfolding in the bank meeting, making space for imagination and fabulation of a possible otherwise.
The approach to the entire production is one of collaboration as a practice of collectivity. The collaboration with the artists departed from a workshop at the artist-run project space Thkio Ppallies. During the workshop, a shared artistic framework led to propositions for the space and the inhabiting artworks. In a similar manner, the script and dialogues were developed collaboratively in workshops with actors who reenacted the bank meeting for the film. The selection of respondees traces personal connections, friendships and expertise shared across various communities.
The project will travel to Beirut where it will be hosted by Beirut Art Center with an exhibition and public program that addresses the project’s core, and specifically in relation to the various movements and concerns that are active in Lebanon since 2019. Starting in the fall of 2022 a comprehensive presentation of The Broken Pitcher will take place at GFZK in Leipzig, which will be followed by presentations at HKW in Berlin, Lehnbachhaus in Munich, Taxispalais Innsbruck and Casco Utrecht.
