On January 7 at 6pm Cóilín will read his text A Phenomenon Only Slightly Strange which explores aspects of the UFO phenomenon as it relates to Ireland and Cyprus. This will be followed by a screening of Looking for Freedom? (2024) by Michael Dignam and Forty-five Seconds (2024) by Ruth Clinton and Niamh Moriarty. In this moment of an ending order and perceived collapse, what does the UFO mean to the peripheral and post colonial states of Ireland and Cyprus? The “U” in UFO currently means “unapproachable” and “unresearchable” just as much as it means “unidentified”. The UFO does not manifest offering solutions to the periphery, but it arrives to undermine forgone conclusions. With reports of UFO activity increasing, can we really afford to ignore the questions that they raise? A Phenomenon Only Slightly Strange explores the UFO subculture as it appears in both popular and vernacular media, using this theme to examine the expressive possibilities of archival material while engaging with belief systems, colonial legacies, and notions of sovereignty. O’Connell’s interest in the subject began during a residency in Limassol, Cyprus, in 2021. While conducting archival research in the city’s newspaper archive, he encountered historical accounts of simultaneous Irish and Cypriot UFO sightings that were later revealed to be covert British military aircraft. This discovery led to an ongoing research project into the topic. The reappraisal of archival material serves as both the conceptual and methodological foundation of the work. The project navigates the tension between two approaches: the archivist, who arranges documents according to a shared logic of record-keeping, and the collage artist, who assembles disparate fragments into singular, intuitive proposals. Both approaches are treated as forms of authorship that assert ownership over history either reinforcing or challenging prevailing narratives and perceptions of the present. Using UFOs as a thematic lens, the project probes the intersections and contradictions of belief, power, folklore, and poetry. Cóilín O’Connell is an artist from Dublin. Through a process of collecting and editing found and original image, object and text his work considers antagonisms between the methodical and the poetic as a means of reworking historical and lived time. ___ Looking for Freedom?&nbsp;(2024), 10’54” Michael Dignam Looking for Freedom reimagines David Hasselhoff’s 1989 performance at the Brandenburg Gate within the fractured spaces of contemporary geopolitics. Set between Nicosia’s buffer zone and Limassol’s speculative skyline, the work stages a whispered, fragile version of the anthem once hailed as a symbol of liberation. Forty-five Seconds (2024), 15’14” Ruth Clinton and Niamh Moriarty On the 31st March 1993, two Gardaí (policemen) were driving around on late-night patrol in a small west of Ireland town when they witnessed strange lights in the sky above them. At the time, their story was taken seriously, given their social standing, and was reported in Irish media. RCS’s first cycle will take place at Thkio Ppalies project space in Nicosia. Through a series of open-practice sessions, workshops, and choreo-curated events, the school seeks to expand the practice of choreography and to cultivate an understanding of the political and social dimensions of movement and planetary thinking. Engaging directly with the politics of working together, the choreographic school proposes different ways of gathering, where a new kind of dialogue, or dance, emerges between practitioner and audience, between artist and citizen. Influenced by Karen Barad’s term Intra-action the choreographic school aims to nurture an environment of working alongside and in relation with the world we inhabit, with radical softness as a relational compass. By creating practice grounds, the school wants to hold space for dialogue and exchange, embracing somatic and experiential learning accompanied and supported by theoretical research. Rhyzome Choreographic School wants to remain in a constant state of search as we reimagine what a school can be. RCS is a project by the sisters Eva and Belinda Papavasiliou. Featuring an installation, music performance, film screenings, talks, and workshops, the program critically interrogates the ways in which individual and systemic borders construct and control dominant notions of “Otherness.” To speak of the Other is to speak of the edge of the self—a liminal space where identity is forged not in isolation, but through close encounters. While the Other remains fundamental to self-recognition, this dynamic has long been exploited by hegemonic structures, resulting in systems of oppression, exclusion, and erasure. In response to evolving global crises marked by wars, mass displacement, and pervasive surveillance, The Near and the Elsewhere invites us to unlearn the architectures of othering that continue to fracture our shared realities. The program aims to foster embodied dialogues rooted in alternative modes of collective belonging and emergent identities. We are the 2024–2025 COOP study group An Invitation to Action—A Basis for Hope—cultural workers from Honduras, Greece, China, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Italy, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Over the past year, we’ve been following the traces of the Medu Art Ensemble, learning how culture can challenge the systems that try to contain it. From Nida’s quiet forests to the buffer zone in Nicosia, we’ve been listening. Practicing Harney and Thompson’s slow reading, walking until silence taught us something, tuning into the fading signals of Radio Alice and Free Radio Algeria. We’ve tried to do as Pauline Oliveros once suggested: “walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears.” What we offer here is simple: radio as a weapon, feast as gathering, a newsletter (co-developed with Fisherwomxn) as a place to hold what can’t be held elsewhere. These transmissions carry temper—not rage that explodes, but the warmth that sustains. Like Mutabaruka’s Every Time A Ear De Soun, our voices loop and overlap, building echoes out of what was left unsaid. Fanon once wrote that we must use the past to open the future. To visit the ruins and to understand them as a site of rebirth, as an impetus for action. That’s what this is. No projections. No spectacle. Ppalies present Roaming Assembly#32Curated by Peter Eramian &amp; Stelios KallinikouState Gallery of Contemporary Art - SPEL ENG Without a permanent home, students, tutors and crew of the Dutch Art Institute congregate seven times per year at different places throughout Europe (and beyond) to study together, weaving an archipelago of distinct localities and initiatives, each with their own rhythms and objectives. Curator and tutor Marina Christodoulidou is Archipelago Weaver 2025: guiding an extended journey to Cyprus. We warmly welcome you to join DAI in Nicosia for the public part of its programme, hosted by SPEL, and guest-curated by artist run space Thkio Ppalies (Peter Eramian &amp; Stelios Kallinikou). Palestinian peer, Munir Fasheh, writes “we discovered our sources of strength that were connected to our internal immune systems.” Taking this as our starting point, the focus of the assembly is to unpack the notion of the ever given, as in, what are the sources of strength and resistance that we have at our disposal, at hand, at all times? Departing from the case of the Suez Canal incident in 2021, when ‘mere’ strong winds resulted in a giant container ship named the Ever Given blocking the canal and causing a global trade disruption, we are interested in acknowledging and contemplating on forces that have the potential to traverse scale. The island of Cyprus has historically been a crossroads for trade, extractivism and antagonistic colonial powers, due to its geostrategic location in the Mediterranean and its abundant natural resources. We see this until today, as large corporations and global powers are increasingly exploiting the island either for its low tax schemes or for military operations in the region. In this sense, Cyprus is not dissimilar to the Suez Canal, a narrow passageway serving global interests, bearing implications beyond its geographical boundaries. In response, now more than ever, local communities are organising and (re)forming radical configurations, bringing together activists, artists, musicians, writers and academics from across the island, but also making active efforts to create and revive transnational alliances with communities across the region. The assembly is curated with these urgencies in mind, inviting participants whose practices are demonstrative or expressive of qualities that could be situated as ever given and in solidarity with critical infrastructures and grassroots ecosystems. - Inspired by Munir Fasheh’s “soils”, Oraib Toukan thinks through and with the spirit of geology, to try and understand why images sometimes appear the way they do, to contemplate the space between the seen, and the unseen. Specifically looking at Palestinian stone, both as image and metaphor, Toukan explores why this tiny overexposed part of this earth, with its exceptional cloudless clarity and remarkable layered hues, is so hard to see. - Natascha Sadr Haghighian asks, how does one find one’s bearings in the face of genocide and oppression? Are we at a tactical juncture in the arts that calls for a more profound review of strategies, skill sets, longings, affective investments and engagements? - Ilaeira Agrotou Georgiou explores the historical position of women through traditional Cypriot dance, uncovering the history of a people under colonial power who had no access to record keeping. - “Choosing the Sad End” is a four-chapter artistic research project by Ali Hussein Al-Adawy and Haytham el-Wardany that seeks to inspire a political imagination in the current moment through dialogues with four characters in four different cities that act as gateways to specific archival and historical networks, engaging with national liberation, decolonization movements, and transnational solidarity in the “Third World” (Global South). - In the presentation “Waters of Cyprus, Syria, and Egypt”, Stavros Karayanni poses questions that have to do with the body’s kinesthesia as inextricably linked to the various kinds of heritage that the body carries, where memory sculpts its presence in movement. - Centering storytelling and historical contextualization, Yael Navaro discusses people's engagements with spaces, land, homes, objects, sacred sites and trees left behind from others who used to live there prior to catastrophe, through visuals from anthropological work on postwar Nicosia, Cyprus and post-genocide Antakya, Turkey. - Haig Aivazian and Noor Abed enact a score composed of sound, text, and movement, reassembling elements from a recent correspondence spanning several months, as a way to grapple with a heightened historical moment characterised by a peak in the constant hum of genocidal violence that has structured the artists’ respective trajectories. - Honest Electronics present a music lineup featuring steliosilchuk and x.ypno, performing unreleased material from their upcoming second album alongside previously released tracks in the South-Cypriot dialect; Kasska, whose songs are driven by breakbeats and a sharp rhythmic flow, performs songs that give the Cypriot lyrics a new pace, while carrying themes of resilience, perseverance, and self-responsibility; dj harama, concludes the day with an experimental dance set fitting to the transitional hours, moving through different genres while pushing the listening boundaries of the dancefloor. Ως Archipelago Weaver 2025, η επιμελήτρια και διδάσκουσα Μαρίνα Χριστοδουλίδου καθοδηγεί ένα παρατεταμένο ταξίδι στην Κύπρο. Σας καλωσορίζουμε θερμά στο δημόσιο πρόγραμμα του DAI στη Λευκωσία, το οποίο φιλοξενείται στην Κρατική Πινακοθήκη Σύγχρονης Τέχνης – ΣΠΕΛ, σε επιμέλεια του ανεξάρτητου χώρου πολιτιστικών δράσεων Θκιο Ππαλιές (Peter Eramian &amp; Στέλιος Καλλινίκου). Ο Παλαιστίνιος δάσκαλος, Munir Fasheh, γράφει «ανακαλύψαμε τις μορφές εκείνες της δύναμής μας που συνδέονται με το εσωτερικό ανοσοποιητικό μας σύστημα». Με εφαλτήριο τα λόγια του Fasheh, στον πυρήνα της συζήτησής μας βρίσκεται η διερεύνηση ιδέων γύρω από δυνάμεις που κατά κάποιον τρόπο βρίσκονται παντοτινά μέσα μας (Ever Given). Ποιες είναι οι μορφές αντίστασης που έχουμε στη διάθεσή μας, ανά πάσα στιγμή; Εμπνευσμένοι από το γεγονός της φραγής της Διώρυγας του Σουέζ το 2021, όταν το πρωί της 23ης Μαρτίου, ισχυροί άνεμοι είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα το γιγαντιαίο πλοίο μεταφοράς εμπορευματοκιβωτίων με την ονομασία Ever Given να φράξει τη διώρυγα προκαλώντας διαταραχές στο παγκόσμιο εμπόριο. Η συνάντηση επιχειρεί να αναγνωρίσει και να αναλογιστεί τις δυνάμεις μας που έχουν τη δυνατότητα να υπερβαίνουν την χωρική και χρονική κλίμακα. Το νησί της Κύπρου, λόγω της γεωστρατηγικής του θέσης στη Μεσόγειο και των άφθονων φυσικών πόρων, υπήρξε ιστορικά ένα σταυροδρόμι σημαντικό για το εμπόριο, ένας τόπος εξορυκτικής εκμετάλλευσης, αλλά και ένας χώρος όπου τα ανταγωνιστικά αποικιοκρατικά συμφέροντα, διαχρονικά, διαπλέκονται. Αυτό είναι εμφανές μέχρι και σήμερα, καθώς μεγάλοι διεθνείς παράγοντες εκμεταλλεύονται το χαμηλό φορολογικό καθεστώς, την ίδια ώρα που παγκόσμιες δυνάμεις βαθαίνουν την επιρροή τους στο νησί για να διασφαλίσουν τα γεωπολιτικά τους συμφέροντα στην ευρύτερη περιοχή. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η Κύπρος δεν διαφέρει πολύ από τη Διώρυγα του Σουέζ, ένα πέρασμα που εξυπηρετεί παγκόσμιας κλίμακας οικονομικά συμφέροντα, με τις επιπτώσεις και στις δύο περιπτώσεις να εκτείνονται πέρα από τα γεωγραφικά τους όρια. Παράλληλα, τώρα περισσότερο από ποτέ, οι τοπικές κοινότητες οργανώνονται και (ανα)σχηματίζουν ριζοσπαστικές συνθέσεις, φέρνοντας μαζί ακτιβιστές, καλλιτέχνες, μουσικούς, συγγραφείς και ακαδημαϊκούς από όλο το νησί, ενώ καταβάλλουν προσπάθειες να δημιουργήσουν και να αναβιώσουν υπερεθνικές συμμαχίες με κοινότητες από την ευρύτερη περιοχή. Η συνάντησή μας αφορμάται από αυτές τις επείγουσες ανάγκες, και προσκαλεί συμμετέχοντες των οποίων οι πρακτικές εκφράζουν έννοιες και αξίες που συναντιούνται με την παρούσα επιμελητική πρόταση και είναι αλληλέγγυες με ζωτικές υποδομές και οικοσυστήματα που δημιουργούνται από τη βάση της κοινωνίας. - Αντλώντας έμπνευση από τις σκέψεις του Munir Fasheh για το «χώμα», η Oraib Toukan σκέφτεται σε συνέργεια με το πνεύμα της γεωλογίας και προσπαθεί να κατανοήσει γιατί οι εικόνες εμφανίζονται μερικές φορές με τον τρόπο που αναδύονται, προσμετρώντας το χώρο μεταξύ του ορατού και του αόρατου. Εξετάζοντας συγκεκριμένα την παλαιστινιακή πέτρα, τόσο ως εικόνα όσο και ως μεταφορά, η Toukan διερευνά γιατί αυτό το μικροσκοπικό υπερεκτεθειμένο κομμάτι γης, με την εξαιρετική διαύγεια και τις αξιοσημείωτες πολυεπίπεδες αποχρώσεις, παραμένει αόρατο. - Η Natascha Sadr Haghighian αναρωτιέται, πώς βρίσκει κανείς τον προσανατολισμό του εν μέσω γενοκτονίας και καταπίεσης. Βρισκόμαστε σε μια κρίσιμη καμπή στις τέχνες που απαιτεί μια πιο βαθιά αναθεώρηση των στρατηγικών, των δεξιοτήτων, των επιθυμιών, των αισθητηριακών αναζητήσεων και ενεργειών. - Η Ιλαέρια Αγρότου Γεωργίου διερευνά την ιστορική θέση της γυναίκας μέσα από τον παραδοσιακό κυπριακό χορό, αποκαλύπτοντας την ιστορία ενός λαού υπό την αποικιοκρατική εξουσία που δεν είχε πρόσβαση σε αρχεία. - Το “Choosing the Sad End” είναι ένα καλλιτεχνικό ερευνητικό έργο τεσσάρων κεφαλαίων από τους Ali Hussein Al-Adawy και Haytham el-Wardany, το οποίο επιδιώκει να εμπνεύσει μια πολιτική φαντασία στη δεδομένη χρονική συγκυρία, μέσα από διαλόγους με τέσσερις μορφές σε τέσσερις διαφορετικές πόλεις, που λειτουργούν ως πύλες σε συγκεκριμένα αρχειακά και ιστορικά δίκτυα, εμπλέκοντας την εθνική απελευθέρωση, τα κινήματα αποαποικιοποίησης και τη διεθνιστική αλληλεγγύη στον λεγόμενο «Τρίτο Κόσμο» (Παγκόσμιος Νότος). - Στην παρουσίαση “Waters of Cyprus, Syria, and Egypt”, ο Σταύρος Καραγιάννης θέτει ερωτήματα που έχουν να κάνουν με την κιναισθησία του σώματος, ως άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένη με τα διάφορα είδη κληρονομιάς που φέρει το σώμα, όπου η μνήμη σμιλεύει την παρουσία της στην κίνηση. - Η Yael Navaro συζητά τις σχέσεις των ανθρώπων με τους χώρους, τη γη, τα σπίτια, τα αντικείμενα, τους ιερούς τόπους και τα δέντρα που άφησαν πίσω τους άλλοι που ζούσαν εκεί πριν από την καταστροφή, μέσα από οπτικό υλικό από ανθρωπολογικές εργασίες στη μεταπολεμική Λευκωσία της Κύπρου και τη μεταγενοκτονική Αντάκια της Τουρκίας. - Ο Haig Aivazian και η Noor Abed θέτουν σε εφαρμογή μια παρτιτούρα που αποτελείται από ήχο, κείμενο και κίνηση, ανασυνθέτοντας στοιχεία από μια πρόσφατη αλληλογραφία που διήρκεσε αρκετούς μήνες, ως έναν τρόπο να καταπιαστούν με μια έντονη ιστορική στιγμή που χαρακτηρίζεται από την κορύφωση του διαρκούς βουητού της γενοκτονικής βίας που έχει χαρακτηρίσει τις πορείες και των δύο καλλιτεχνών αντίστοιχα. - Η Honest Electronics παρουσιάζει ένα μουσικό πρόγραμμα με τους steliosilchuk και x. ypno, οι οποίοι θα παρουσιάσουν ακυκλοφόρητο υλικό από το επερχόμενο δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους μαζί με ήδη κυκλοφορημένα κομμάτια στην κυπριακή διάλεκτο. Η Kasska, της οποίας τα κομμάτια καθοδηγούνται από breakbeats και μια απότομη ρυθμική ροή, ερμηνεύει τραγούδια που δίνουν νέο ρυθμό στους κυπριακούς στίχους, ενώ καταπιάνεται με θέματα ανθεκτικότητας, επιμονής και αυτοευθύνης. Poster by Nikos Stephou Encyclopedia, construction as knowledge. How are communities constructed and sustained across time and space? What material and discursive processes make the creation of human communities possible? And how are social gatherings central in creating and reproducing these communities? We take the concept of the gathering as a keystone element in how communities are evoked and conjured in the historical time and the material space. The intentional coming together of numerous persons in specific locations and instances constructs cycles of sociality in what often becomes a ritualistic and periodical practice. Gatherings as observed by anthropologists include a variety of elements, some common across the vast diversity of human societies: food and drinks; ceremonial and religious practices; speeches and conversations; canonical codes in dressing, dancing, and singing amongst others; leisure but also serenity. In this sense, gatherings are not random events but highly organised and structured events. They conceal political intentionalities as well as desires for articulating a community in the present and in the days to come. As gatherings become the interface where human affect can be expressed, we propose to approach them as a form of creating resilience amongst each and every one of the participants. Resilience, as quality and as constructed reality, appears to be a central objective in the experience of people in the contemporary world. It sounds like a cliché to speak of a world that is getting closer and closer to the apocalypse. We contend however that many people around us live their life as if the destruction of the world is more of a lived reality rather than an anticipated future. Climate destruction, wars and genocides, a cost of living that becomes unbearable, and a life which becomes harder and harder. Thus, people look for mechanisms to cope, for strategies to reclaim their right to remember but also to forget. In this context, social gatherings have a very significant role in canalizing human pain and building resilience. A resilience which persons know that it is not sufficient to revert the dire situation. It creates the possibilities though to sustain life. Panos Achniotis The project is built around the concept of resilience and proposes spatial tools that arise around questions concerning the ways in which a mobile structure engages with a community. Structure as ecology can be understood as a living organism to support a community and redefine what constitutes a community. These tools or modules are assembled to create structures to host multiple cultural events, even in the absence of any existing infrastructure. The modules can be reused in different situations, activated and moved by the input of other people, while introducing new spatial features to the existing space. Like a docking pole planted in the open sea it aims to anchor our community in feminist and anti-colonial thought and to provide a space for its collective study. Floating side by side, the resident artists, invited practitioners and the public will seek to challenge the prevailing eurocentric, patriarchal and hegemonic approach to knowledge by reimagining the space and function of the library. How do knowledge(s) intersect in the context of cyprus and the eastern mediterranean? How can we hold space for other forms of knowing that exist beyond the dominant cannon? Through a series of workshops, screenings, readings and other activations the program will propose an expanded library, one which seeks for answers beyond the book format and makes space for oral traditions, craftwork, somatic practices and other forms of knowing. Fisherwomxn started as a literary journal aiming to deconstruct narratives that push and pull us from the places we call home. We wrote to each other around questions that we could not answer on our own: How can we bear the responsibility of regenerating our lands in our postcolonial realities? How can we find alternative spaces of refuge and of being together beyond the futility of nation states and other imperialistic structures? &nbsp; Gervaise Alexis Savvias Open discussion with Irini Khenkin Sound performance by Ichomagnetic Thoughts Poster by Stelios Ilchuk FISSILE MATERIAL is the physical cumulation of a long-term research project undertaken by Gervaise Alexis Savvias; a reflective tidbit of an ongoing, interpersonal archival exploration. Through a symbiosis of parapoetics, prose and research, the publication is a sensitive relation to and exploration of (self) archiving, informed by the author’s own interaction with their locality’s recollection of 1974; genealogy, and theory. And as always: poetry is political. The evening will be comprised of a series of short readings from the publication by Gervaise, followed by an open discussion (in English) alongside curator and interdiscipinary artist, Irini Khenkin. The evening will conclude with a performative activation alongside Ichomagnetic Thoughts (Antonia Kattou, Stelios Antoniou). Through this activation, we conjure spirits; animate poetic reflections on the concept-matter of the archive, and by that metric, add meaning in tongue; in the present.
